IPADS: THE BASICS
The headphone/speaker intake is on
the left side of the top.
The Home button is in the center of the bottom of the IPAD.
Things to consider
Keyboard or stylus
While you can type on the digital keyboard and draw with your finger, there are plenty of physical keyboards available and styluses.
Classroom Management - Set the expectations for sucess.
1. Designate a permanent spot for the IPads that doesn't change. Kids will know where to pick them up, but more importantly, put them back. Before anybody leaves, make sure you account for all of them. A permanent spot will make this job easier. Have the area be close to an outlet, where you can plug in the cart. Easy to go through the batteries.
2. Pick a system of distributing them that works and stick with it. One person pass them out, picking them up one at a time. with numbers and colors. (I.E. red 1, blue 2, yellow 3 or Matisse 1, Van Gogh 2, Picasso 3). Come up with your own system that works for you. This will help with grouping and partners later on and limit the number of repeated questions, arguing, etc...

3. If you can, give instructions to them prior to handing out the IPads. If this is impossible, give instructions with the IPads facing down on the table/desk. You'll avoid repeating instructions to distracted students.
4. If possible, have information on a platform that they can access at home, before and after the assignment whether its a website (wix.com/weebly.com), cloud computing (dropbox/box/one drive/Google docs) or a school webpage. That way they can access the information again and again and again.
5. Getting cases on the IPads will help protect the screens from breaking
6. Put all the apps that you are not using in a folder by holding your finger down on the app until it starts shaking. Then slide it on top of another you're not currently using. That being said, if one of your apps has disappeared, check to see if it hasn't inadvertently been placed in a folder or deleted.
7. The most important part of all of this is to set clear expectations for how the IPads are to be used, handled, and treated. To put this in perspective, I have a bunch of Crayola markers which are nice, but in reality they are cheap. The kids forget to put the caps back on them, careless put them away, take them out of the classroom....I also have some king sized Sharpie markers that are only used for special occasions that I call my Birthday markers. I say the class set was given to me as a birthday present. For whatever reason, there is a sense that more care needs to be given because the image of how special these are to me. Whatever you do, give them a sense of aura/wow...
Using the IPads
Apps
APPS is short for applications. They are the programs loaded on the IPad through Itunes. In addition to the ones that will be covered today, you will also use safari, (Apple's Internet Browser), Camera (an App that comes pre-installed on the IPad to take pictures, and the Photos App (where the photos/screen captures, and movies are saved)
Volume Purchase Program listed in the ITunes store have a certain price. If your school is signed up as an educational institution (which most likely it is) you will receive a 50% discount for every app you buy in bulk. Ten 99 cent apps will cost you $4.95.
Screen Shots
Hold the power button and the home button down at the same time. You will create a screen shot that will be saved to your camera roll/photos folder.
Saving IMages on to the ipad.
Getting information off of your IPad
USB Cord
You can plug your USB cord into your desktop computer. It's a little bit different than a regular digital camera, but not too much. You can download all the pictures/movies to a desk top.
Cloud STorage
Cloud storage is where your information is saved to "the cloud" on a server some where and accessed on other devices. Every Apple ID has a 5 G storage option on the cloud, but is paid after that. Google and Dropbox are two of the many options available that are free (Box, Uploadingit, Onedrive, etc...)
Google Drive
Google Drive lets you keep all your stuff in one place. Upload all your files from your computer - even the big ones - and you can access them anywhere including your IPhone or IPad. It works with your school Gmail-based account, which currently gives you 30 GB of storage. Soon to be unlimited.
Drop Box/Box
Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. After you install Dropbox on your IPad, any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, iPhone, IPad and even the Dropbox website! With the Dropbox app, you can take everything that matters to you on the go. Not only do you have access to your stuff, it's always backed up and safe on Dropbox.com.
Projecting your IPad to your computer
Reflector and Airs Server - These are not IPad apps, but they allow you to take advantage of a built in feature. (iPad 2 and Up) - wireless screen sharing. No need for a $99 apple TV or a $29 adapter cord! These desktop computer applications mimic an Apple TV when your IPad and computer are on the same wireless network and once in mirror mode anything on your IPad screen will shown on your desktop and in turn your classroom projector, wire free!
Not going to guarantee that either of these apps will work in your specific school wireless network environment - check with your District Technology Specialist to see if you can use either of these apps or even if that have something already in place. Both offer a free trial, so give them a shot!
