FACES I Make: Collages
Digital Collage-making app

To truly understand this app, it's best to know about it's creator, Hanoch Piven. Hanoch Piven was born in Uruguay and grew up in Israel. His love for art led him to New York City and the School of Visual Arts. When he enrolled, he realized that his drawing skills "sucked" when compared to his peers. Staying positive, he developed his own style which he described as "playing with objects". His "Caricature Collages" consist of a combination of every day objects, paint and construction paper and quickly garnered international acclaim in the art world. Recently, Hanoch took his this idea to the next level and created the wonderful app, Faces I Make, that allows the user to use app-supplied themed objects (such as kitchen, musical instruments, candy, etc..) or use things in their own camera roll to create their very own fantastic digital collages.
I had the pleasure of talking to Hanoch Piven last year. Let me share what our conversation.
Dear Chris,
Here are some random thoughts in the subject that perhaps will make sense to you:
Art is play. It is a game and games prepare us for life. It is important for artists and art teachers to help educators understand the importance of the arts in education. The usefulness of it.Therefore I think it is essential for art teachers to create art projects that support the curriculum..and yet bring another angle from which the relevant subject matter can be observed.
Visual arts are a form of communication and that simple premise should be pushed in the school environment. Art can help students communicate with classmates, with teachers, and also with themselves, inwards, being introspective.
Not all students are good with words. With verbal language. Arts expand the vocabulary. An art project should be one which allows and encourages exploration in a safe environment.
It should be open and loose enough yet with clear parameters which give the students something to be triggered by and react to.
Most of all it should be exciting, tempting and fun.
I attach a talk I gave last year at the Social Innovation Summit titled: From STEM to STEAM.
